Southwestern College Partnership
Southwestern College President Merriman promised a $25,000 scholarship over a four year period to any Stucky student admitted to Southwestern College.
President Merriman told students Southwestern was making this commitment to encourage them to do well in school and to help them plan to attend college.
Students with mostly A's in high school, high ACT or SAT scores, and good conduct will be admitted to Southwestern.
At an assembly, President Merriman provided information about Southwestern College. It is rated a top tiered comprehensive college in Kansas. Freshmen receive a laptop at enrollment, trade it in as a junior, and take the laptop with them when they graduate.
Southwestern College is providing tutors and mentors to Stucky students, and college students enrolled in the education department will student teach at Stucky.
According to Mr. Davis, 34% of Stucky's student body had a 3.5 GPA or better, and 85% of the students had a 2.0 GPA or better during the first nine-week marking period.
Mr. Davis expressed pride in the students and encouraged them to do even better during the next nine weeks. The vision at Stucky is "A Transformation to Greatness, Through Academic Excellence, Impeccable Conduct, and Tremendous Effort".
Mr. Davis hopes all Stucky students will attend a 2-year or 4-year institution to continue their education when they graduate. The partnership with Southwestern College will help Stucky students keep their eye on that goal.
According to President Merriman:
- Thirty to 45 Stucky students would receive mentoring and tutoring from 15 Southwestern students in math and science.
- Southwestern students studying education, social work and nursing would do internships at the school. Stucky teachers would serve as mentors for the education students.
- All Stucky alumni who are accepted to Southwestern College will receive a scholarship.
