Sixth Grade Social Studies Students Study Fair Housing Act

Speakers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) spoke with students about the Fair Housing Act. Students learned that "fair housing is not an option, it's the law." This year is the 40th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, where discrimination in housing is prohibited because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disibility, or family status. The Fair Housing Act was part of Civil Rights legislation enacted under President Lyndon Johnson.

Students learned that HUD enforces policies that allow all Americans have equal access to housing. People who believe they have been discriminated against can contact HUD. HUD statistics show that over 10,000 people filed complaints last year. The largest number of complaints were from people with disabilities.

Stucky students participated in activites to help them learn about this important Act and were awarded certificates after completing the course.
